Chapter Fourteen

“Hello?”

“Hey, it’s me.”

“Oh, hi Ben, I didn’t recognize the number.” Marg held the bread bag against her chest as she used her free hand to reach into the cupboard for the peanut butter and jelly while balancing the phone between her head and shoulder.

“I’m calling from the office phone, that’s why.”

“Is everything okay?”

“Yes, so far, so good. Well, it depends on how you’ll take the news, actually.”

“What does that mean?” Marg’s brows furrowed. She put down the items on the kitchen island to properly secure the phone against her ear.

“Do you have your laptop close by?”

“Um yeah, I do. I was looking at some cottages in close vicinity to the inn.” She turned and leaned against the island, folding her empty hand across her chest. She sighed heavily. “Turns out there aren’t many of those selling, especially in my price range. I think I might just have to rent.”

“I told you to leave that part up to me, remember? I know the market. I can help you get something that is to your specifications and within range.”

A small smile graced Marg’s lips. “I do appreciate all of your help, Ben. Believe me, I do. I just don’t want you to overextend yourself, just to help me.”

“Marg, you’re my friend, and I really want to do this for you. So can you just let me do this for you, please?”

She hesitated.

“What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know… it’s just…well, you’d mentioned that your company is in charge of the sale of that huge commercial lot back on N Oak Harbor St., the one they’re planning to build that mall on. You said it was a big sale and needed all hands on deck, late nights and coffee-filled mornings— I remember.”

There was a long pause on the line as she waited for him to respond. “You there?”

“I am. Sorry about that. I was responding to an agent. We do have that big project, but it doesn’t stop me from helping you, Marg. All I’m simply asking is that you allow me to do this for you. Can you?”

“I’ll try,” she conceded softly. “What did you want to tell me earlier?” she asked, to change the direction of the conversation.

“I need you to go to the agency’s website and type in your address.”

Marg pulled her laptop across the counter and did as he instructed. As soon as she inputted her address, there popped up on her screen was a photograph of a beautiful two-story craftsman-style home with low-pitched gable roofs and tapered columns on the porch. This was all painted a deep tan, with the porch railings and steps being painted with cream and the trimming around the windows.

Below all that was the description: “Beautiful four bedroom, two and a half bath home with a cozy fireplace in the den, formal dining space, and a spacious kitchen. Home boasts large French windows, great for natural lighting, and offers the perfect view of the Northern Cascades and Mount Rainier.”

She liked how well-written and inviting the advert was, and the photo gallery of the interior of the house showed off its best qualities.
